Whether you call them chips, crisps, wafers or “the best part about being stoned,” we all have a favorite variety. I don’t have any major preferences, but I eat them so rarely I get something familiar because nothing makes me feel as great as the unhealthy times I’ve had. Oh dear, if only that weren’t 100% true.
Ruffles Tapatio Limon chips come in a bag that’s partially Ruffles Blue, but mostly Tapatio Orange (that’s about as extensive of a narrative as I could garner from the front of the bag). The Tapatio Man smiles at you, knowing you are helpless against his mustache’s tractor beam. My theory: What we perceive to be a sombrero is actually the Tapatio Man’s hard-earned halo.
Opening the bag to take a peek inside emits a smell similar to that of Lays Salt & Vinegar chips. Definitely vinegar. Although I’m searching for a whiff of lime or something like it says on the bag. Nothing. The chips themselves are actually quite attractive. They beckon, reddish and ridged. As I reach into the bag, it occurs to me it’s actually been quite a while since I’ve had any type of Ruffle. And yes, that tidbit was completely pertinent.
They’re crispy and much better than I was expecting. Bite #1 is instantly zesty and, after a chew or two, the lime appears! Not that I’m especially citrus-centric, but when I am promised produce, I have certain expectations. Namely, that citrus be present.
For the record, I have never had any Tapatio-flavored snacks before but as of now I look forward to them. These chips have a more subdued spice than any type of Flaming Hot treat. Each mouthful adds more heat and by the time I’ve eaten half the bag I’m alert and reinvigorated. While fried snacks tend to slow you down, perhaps the beauty in making them spicy is cancelling out the inevitable food coma.
