Jalapeño Cheddar Showdown: Chex Mix vs. Munchies

I did  a bad thing …

A really bad thing …

I put two bags of snack mix in front of me when I was hungry.

I think all this facing off between my foods is starting to get to me. I’m a red-blooded American with an appetite for competition and sportsmanship. So, whether it be movie candy or bottled water, nothing gets me going quite like a showdown.

Today it was the plethora of Chex Mix varieties coloring the random snack cracker / whatever a bugle is aisle. Not knowing where to start, I figured, “Hey, you, today is a good day to draw comparisons.” Yes, that’s usually what my inner monologue sounds like.

Chex Mix Jalapeño Cheddar

Chex Mix is classic. I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to cover even one of these flavors, but alas, that’s how the pretzel crumbles. Speaking of which, let’s get one thing straight: Pretzels are the worst part of any snack mix. This applies for both varieties I’m highlighting today. The only positive about Chex Mix, is the lively, different circle and square pretzels! These aren’t civilian pretzels that Chex just picked up and threw in the mix. Custom pretzels, while still the worst part, are pretty cool.

As you may have noticed from the photo above, the rye chip has been replaced with a triangle-shaped cracker. It’s zesty, it’s new and it works better with the combo than a rye chip would.

Overall, I feel the zest after a couple bites, which is exactly what I’m looking for.

Right off the bat, I am more excited to indulge in some Munchies. I’m a big fan of this clusterfun of chip varieties. (I hope everyone understands that I’m censoring the word “clusterfuck” in a fun way!) However, the pretzels are all wrong! I don’t want standard issue pretzels. I mean, I know I’m not going to eat them, but what about those snazzy ones in fun shapes?!

Also, these guys aren’t spicy. While neither of these mixes tastes like green chile pepper, I feel like the brand should promise some sort of spice. This one fails miserably. I can’t string you on any more, the choice is obvious …

THE WINNER:

Chex Mix is the clear winner. It’s not Munchies’s fault. A glance at the back of the bag makes it evident that these are four separate snacks with four separate identities, mixed up all helter skelter. Chex Mix has the advantage of curating its snack mixes from triangular cracker to circular pretzel.  Plus, the zest question is absolutely no contest. If I buy a bag of something that says “jalapeno” on the front and it’s not spicy, I feel fooled.

Plus, this one is 20 calories less per serving – a pittance, but it makes me feel better.

  1. It looks to me that the Munchies has the superior individual chips, but I can also see how they wouldn’t work well together. I’d probably seperate all the chips by type before eating them, but that’s the kind of thing that a person has to be alone to do.

  2. We totally agree with your assessment. Chex Mix definitely wins out in that battle. We do appreciate Munchies Flamin’ hot, and our favorite Chex Mix are the Hot & Spicy flavored ones. Great showdown post!
