I’ve had my eye on the WHOPPERS Peanut Butter Malted Milk Balls for quite some time. Well, as long as they’ve been at the gas station register, which has been two weeks or so. The pale orange, almost peachy color of the box combined with the beige, peanut-butter colored malted balls depicted on the box is new and enticing. I am sold at first glance.
Imagine the setting: the gas station. Last Thursday. I am paying for my two Thirsty Thursday beverages when I give in and tell Bernard to ring me up for this beautiful, orange treat.
New setting: It’s Monday. I’ve saved this treat to turn my Monday Blues into Monday Oranges. I open the box, peer inside and bite into a creamy, crunchy PB malt ball.
At first, I’m all like “woah” and then I’m all like “huh” and then my brain goes “wowsers!”
Let me translate that for you. I don’t suck on candy; I bite into it. So when I crunch right through the peanut butter whopper, I don’t notice any difference. Of course, this is followed by malted milk flavor and I don’t taste the Reese’s peanut butter until afterward. But when I do, the flavor combination is rich, delicious and yet somehow more mild than the chocolate variety. Plus, the peanut butter taste lingers for ages in your mouth. The same way an Irish Car Bomb is booze dropped into more booze at first, but you are left with a malty, chocolate taste in your mouth afterward.
I shouldn’t be so surprised that this is delicious. After all, malt is added into all sorts of ice creams and shakes and still enjoyed. Now please, somebody figure out a peanut butter version of these Whopper cupcakes courtesy of The Sassy Swan.
