Andy Capp’s Cheddar Fries and Hot Fries

andy capps, hot fries, french fry in french, fries, snack chip

What beloved snack looks like a fry and crunches like a chip? (UK translation: What beloved snack looks like a chip and crunches like a crisp?)

I’ll give you a hint: You can find one of your favorite comic strip figures on the bag!

Still not doing it? Hmm… It has 0 grams trans fat but 1 million grams of fun!

OK, I wouldn’t have gotten this either. With the help of some research I found out Andy Capp’s were created in the early ’70s and licensed the name of the comic book character. One more Wikipedia click led me back to the 20th century – where comic strips were printed on paper and the art was good. I mean, Cyanide and Happiness just wouldn’t have cut it back then.

Andy Capp, the unemployed, working-class character from Northeast England somehow became the mascot for these snacks, and what snacks they are!

Over in the miscellaneous, cracker-adjacent section – you know, between the Bugles and popcorn – I see two distinct, blue bags. One reads “Hot Fries” with flames, the other “Cheddar Fries” with … speckles? I read the words “Corn and Potato Snacks” under each and I’m sold. This is what I call hybrid snacking.

First comes the cheddar variety. So crispy! It’s like eating a french fry with a little less soul. The cheddar is mild and these seem to be seasoned with something. It’s pleasant but I am eager to get to the HOT FRIES (with bright flames on the lettering, I feel all caps is appropriate).

One bite and I’m raising an eyebrow. Where’s the zest? Oh yeah, it kicks in after fry #3 or so. Zesty, addictive and unique. That’s like the tall, dark and handsome for snack foods. I like that they are a twist on your usual snack. I mean, I can eat Doritos any old time, but Andy Capp’s? Come on! They’re even a cute, phonetic spelling of the word “handicap” in the local English dialect.

My favorite would be the HOT FRIES. Not only do they provide a zestier experience, but they’re 10 calories less per serving as well.
